BEHIND THE STEERING WHEEL: HOLIDAY 2019

Sometimes it just happens. Your dog, on whom you’ve lavished so much love and affection, just had a bad day and snaps at you. The QE I, my ’66 Series IIA 88” SW, has exhibited that very behavior.

Last fall, clearly annoyed by the presence of its stablemate, my ’97 Discovery I SE7, it decided to render its transmission inoperable. With the help of friends, I installed a rebuilt transmission from Rovers North [see Fall 2018 issue -ed.] Then it sleeted, snowed and rained for several months all over my shade tree “garage.”

The Last Overland

(…) "I have a little whisper every now and again, and it says: 'Give it a go before it is too late,'" Slessor, from Wimbledon in London, told the BBC. “It is now or never."

The expedition was “flagged off” on 25 August from the Formula One circuit in Singapore with local enthusiasts escorting Slessor’s vehicle all the way to the Malaysian border. The intrepid travellers are currently in India preparing for the next phase of their journey towards the British capital. (…)

Last Online Khabar (Nepal) : Overland arrives in Nepal. And here, the expeditioner explains highs and lows of his trip

(…) “How is the car?

It’s good. Oxford is 64 years old. She has no power steering, no disk brake, no air conditioning, very very poor windscreen wipers which I have realised in the past few days. And she leaks through the roof and she’s drafty. But by god, she is fun to drive. I call her ‘she’ because Tim always called her ‘she’. He called this car the old lady.

I feel this car has a personality that you get to know gradually and that’s wonderful because this isn’t a normal car. You’re not protected from the environment. You feel the road, you feel the weather, it’s noisy and it’s hard work because you have to concentrate. It makes the journey more fun I’d say.”(…)
