(…) “How is the car?
It’s good. Oxford is 64 years old. She has no power steering, no disk brake, no air conditioning, very very poor windscreen wipers which I have realised in the past few days. And she leaks through the roof and she’s drafty. But by god, she is fun to drive. I call her ‘she’ because Tim always called her ‘she’. He called this car the old lady.
I feel this car has a personality that you get to know gradually and that’s wonderful because this isn’t a normal car. You’re not protected from the environment. You feel the road, you feel the weather, it’s noisy and it’s hard work because you have to concentrate. It makes the journey more fun I’d say.”(…)

SINGAPORE – British student Nathan George grew up listening to his grandfather’s stories about driving from London to Singapore with his friends in 1955 so it was an easy decision to join an expedition that recreates the original jaunt, albeit in reverse.
An historic journey from Singapore to London was flagged off on Sunday (Aug 25) as eight people attempt to reach London in 100 days, reversing a drive that took place six decades ago. Lek Wan Zhen reports.
The Last Overland expedition from Singapore to London was flagged off on 25 August 2019 from the Singapore F1 Pit Building in Marina Bay.
At the time it was the longest of all overland journeys: halfway around the world, from the English Channel to Singapore.
In 1955, six British students set out on an epic expedition in two Series I Land Rovers. The destination was Singapore and the prize was a place in history. One team member shares his best moments.

The Oxford & Cambridge Far Eastern Expedition – The First Overland – made history in 1955 by being the first to drive from London to Singapore. That young team inspired generations of adventurers through their extraordinary endeavour, showing many remote corners of the world on film for the first time.
After featuring in a BBC documentary tv show commissioned by David Attenborough, this Land Rover is on a return journey from Singapore to London some 60 years later.
In 1955, Land Rover sponsored the Oxford and Cambridge Far Eastern Expedition, where six young men from the Oxbridge universities drove almost 29,000 kilometers from London to Singapore. On Sunday in Singapore, one of those men – now 87 – will begin the reverse journey, called “The Last Overland,” in one of the vehicles used in the original caravan.
In 1955, a team of intrepid adventurers set off on The Oxford & Cambridge Far Eastern Expedition- an incredible 16,000 km journey driving from Singapore to London, funded by Land Rover. In August 2019, a team are set to recreate the infamous route and raise funds for Walking With The Wounded.
An 87-year-old man who made history by driving overland from London to Singapore 63 years ago will be doing it all over again in August. This time, Tim Slessor and his six team members will be making the journey in the opposite direction - from Singapore to London. They hope to complete their return journey in 100 days.
It’s a blogpost by the writer, sharing his encounters with Alex and his experience on an overland trip. It shares about the First Overland book by Tim, and includes multiple images of Aug 7’s send off at The Grenadier. It shares how the new expedition will take the First Overland’s journey in reverse, Alex’s role in conceptualizing the journey, ‘Oxford’ being in Singapore. It also introduces Tim who was also at the sendoff, who will be part of the trip, should health permit.
We’ve been overwhelmed by the number of people who’ve got in touch to ask how they can contribute towards the costs of the Last Overland Expedition. We’re very grateful for the offer, but we wanted to harness that awesome goodwill from around the world to support three incredible causes close to our hearts: Dementia UK, Walking with the Wounded and The Gurkha Welfare Trust.
